Summer Transfers 2016

The season is coming to a close, we have an FA Cup semi final to look forward to and a top 4 finish still available but let's have a little fun.

Let's say that LVG will see his contract through :-

What areas do we need to address?

What players would you like to come in?

What do you expect to happen this summer?

Depends who leaves but for me we need to sign a world class midfielder and world class centre half. I feel we have good players in the rest of the positions tbh but defence and centre mid really needs addressing

What's the point in buying anyone if they have to play under van Gaal?

Lets not forget that if Van Gaal stays, were not only buying players that we already need, but replacing the ones that are going to fornicate off

TL;DR version will be posted afterwards

Looking at the business we need to do this summer, I feel there are a couple of areas to add quality, and a couple where we could see strengthening for the future.

Firstly, with regard to the quality in the side, let's work on the basis of a 25 man squad: that's 2 players for every position plus 3 free slots. Not taking into account likely departures, here's my take on where we stand for next season, and how I rate the player:

Key:
Starting XI quality
Potential Starting XI, not guaranteed starter due to youth, inconsistency or injury
Squad player - not irreplaceable

Presumed starters:
GK 1. David de Gea
RB 36. Matteo Darmian
CB 12. Chris Smalling
CB 17. Daley Blind
LB 5. Marcos Rojo
CM 16. Michael Carrick
CM 10. Wayne Rooney
CM 8. Juan Mata

RF 35. Jesse Lingard
LF 9. Anthony Martial
CF 39. Marcus Rashford

I don't want to lose any of these players, but I think the squad players could be replaced, whether by promotion from below or new acquisition

Presumed covers:
GK 20. Sergio Romero
RB 30. Guillermo Varela
CB 4. Phil Jones
CB 51. Timothy Fosu-Mensah
LB 23. Luke Shaw

CM 28. Morgan Schneiderlin
CM 21. Ander Herrera

CM 31. Bastian Schweinsteiger
RF 7. Memphis Depay

LF 18. Ashley Young
CF 19. James Wilson
S1 50. Sam Johnstone
S2 25. Antonio Valencia
S3 27. Marouane Fellaini

I would not mind losing any squad player in this group, but they have their uses in certain circumstances which we would need to replace.

In summary say that we need to buy a Starting XI quality centre forward and centre back. I will go into further detail below, when we move to looking at squad depth.

In terms of squad size (wage considerations excluded), we don't need to sell anyone. We only have 23 players over 21 for next season, so we can buy 2 more without selling, even though one or two may go. Here's what I think of each one:

1. David de Gea - World's Best, 50/50 on whether he stays
20. Sergio Romero - decent cover
50. Sam Johnstone - meh
4. Phil Jones - inconsistent and injury prone
5. Marcos Rojo - can perform at either CB or LB

12. Chris Smalling - our only guaranteed starter at CB
17. Daley Blind - slow, club could do better
25. Antonio Valencia - dependable but losing powers, might be time to go
30. Guillermo Varela - surprisingly good
36. Matteo Darmian - a little inconsistent, but think will be great

42. Tyler Blackett - probably on the way out
8. Juan Mata - better than Van Gaal and Mourinho think
16. Michael Carrick - not quite ready for the pasture, but thinking about it

18. Ashley Young - dependable, but expendable
21. Ander Herrera - better than Van Gaal thinks when used properly
22. Nick Powell - the most surplus player at the club
27. Marouane Fellaini - never gonna be a guaranteed starter, but actually think he has his uses when there is a bit of a fight in the midfield
28. Morgan Schneiderlin - a sure thing for the next 5 years
31. Bastian Schweinsteiger - injuries potentially ruining his United career
35. Jesse Lingard - late bloomer, will probably be a better squad player

10. Wayne Rooney - not a guaranteed starter, probably done for as a striker for us, but should be counted amongst our starting CMs
48. Will Keane - injuries have probably done for him
7. Memphis Depay - Nani-esque, all about his attitude and application

As for those players U21 who have featured this year:

23. Luke Shaw - hoping he comes back from injury
33. Patrick McNair - i like him but doesn't seem to be in favour
37. Donald Love - early days
38. Axel Tuanzebe - early days
43. Cameron Borthwick-Jackson - early days
51. Timothy Fosu-Mensah - very impressive
11. Adnan Januzaj - possible attitude problem, have a feeling he could leave

41. Regan Poole - early days
44. Andreas Pereira - would like to see him get more chances
45. Sean Goss - early days
46. Joe Rothwell - early days
47. James Weir - early days
49. Joe Riley - early days
9. Anthony Martial - definite superstar
39. Marcus Rashford - has been brilliant, but don't expect too much too soon
19. James Wilson - not the kind of striker we need, on the way out.

TL;DR version

Don't think we need to sell anyone, but will probably sell Powell, Wilson and Blackett, possibly Januzaj
De Gea 50/50 to go, no idea who could replace him
Can do better than Blind at CB, Hummels rumours surfacing again
Definitely need a starting quality centre forward. Zlatan anyone? Could do worse than Lukaku if he's not free.
If a spot frees up, I'd look to bring in Mane as an upgrade on Young and Valencia
Might be worth picking up Grealish from Villa. Stones too, but I have a feeling he will go to City or Chelsea.

I'd rather us use Rashford week in week out then rotate Rooney, Martial and Keane when he's not playing

A decent summary from Leftbank - I agree with the most part.

A tad harsh on Blind to be fair - I feel he has been one of our better performers this season....His awareness is second to none - he's a smart player and I think he's done well in the makeshift position that's he's been forced into.......saying that I would like a dirty big brute of a CB to partner smalling. If we get the right man....I think that could be solid foundation. Blind can play anywhere CB,LB,CM and play it effectively.

I do feel we need at least 3-4 proven game winners to get us back competing - we have the young in the squad but we have to give them time to develop probably. A CB, CM playmaker, Winger and a ST would be on my wish list. Our biggest need is a playmaker or two- our lack of creation has been woeful this season - relying on winning a game with a handful of attempts backfires spectacularly when you don't have the players to hit the net.

When we last had an 18 year old leading the line, we Van Nistelrooy and Saha to support and cover. Rooney is done as a striker, and Keane is crocked.

His reading of the game and building from the back are very good, but I am fed up of him being outpaced by pretty much every striker out there.

I'm not sure we do need a playmaker. Rooney, Herrera, Mata, Carrick, Schneiderlin, Schweinsteiger, even Fellaini, all have the ability to create something, but the manager is too limiting in his philosophy.

For me......on paper those guys should be creating but most play far too slow to cause any real damage - countless times we've seen Mata and Rooney etc take too long on the pass - we need players that can play quick - knock quick balls in behind. I am sick and tired of playing in front of 11. Once we establish possession we play so slow it gives teams time to set up at the back - its no secret that speed kills

LOL, we're back to Rooney as a CM, this is a joke right?

Get rid of Rooney and Mata if we want to see the type of football we play change into something quicker and more dynamic.

What would you like our team to look like next season? I think we need to address so key areas but finding the players will be difficult.

----------------------------------De Gea------------------------------
Darmian---------------Smalling-----------?---------------Shaw
----------------------Schneirderlin--------?-------------------------
-----?-------------------------Rooney------------------------Martial
------------------------------------?--------------------------------------

Im 50/50 on Rooney staying in the team but cant see us getting rid of him.

I want us to be able to play fast, attacking football.

A playmaker in CM........Speedy Winger..........World Class proven striker.

The names been thrown around include........Griezmann, Aubameyang, Zlatan - my mind would be blown with those 3.

I know this is fantasy football but most of our current crop are squad players for me - Mata, Herrera, Blind, Schweinsteiger, Young, Valencia.

We have a decent crop of young talent......Fosu-Menash, Rashford, Varela etc but we cant rely on them once again - we need to give them time to mature.

Thoughts?

Sign a forward that can play any of the front three/four positions to be rotated between Rashford, Martial, Mata. Rooney if he stays.

One CM to replace Carrick. Morgan, Herera remain.

Add one established CB. Blind to fight for his place with the new guy.

Lastly, keep fornicate De Gea!

my only signings would be a CB, a CF, and a sub winger

the only players I'd be happy to let go would be fellaini, jones, and valencia

oh and of course, more important than any player transfer is to get rid of that manager

just getting old and we have bright young players in his position. i should rephrase to "I don't mind him leaving" not that i want him to leave

Young on the other hand can cover both flanks so I'd keep him if I'm keeping one of the two.

Nit a right back, a shit winger. Constantly stops an attack because his right is closed off. Passes the ball to relieve himself of pressure only to put others under it.

I don't think he's done badly this year.
He's a good squad player, won't be my first choice, but a 2nd right back? Darmian hasn't been that impressive tbh
