Yep, it is true.
“Bill, how would you like to be manager of the best team in the country?”
And Shankly said: “Why? Is Matt Busby packing it in?”

It's the reason I have always like Madrid over Barcelona.

I have heard about this before (my Uncle told me about it many many years ago) however the only bits I know to be true are the offering to play (and playing ) several high profile friendlies, and that they did offer to sell Puskas to us.

Nice gesture I have to admit even though I hate them as a club (Y)

Only thing there that I can remember hearing was that they wanted the trophy dedicated to United.

The Puskas thing was true, but if Im being cynical, they may have known that the FA wouldnt allow United to sign him ;)

Maybe. What I meant to say was, I've heard all of that pretty much word for word before. Whether it's true or just a myth that's been passed on, I dunno.

The special relationship between United and Real Madrid is fully explained in the wonderful book by John Ludden entitled A Tale Of Two Cities,
sub-titled Manchester and Madrid.1957-1968.

I didn't know that a special memorial pennant was conferred by Real Madrid entitled Champions Of Honour. On it were the names of all the players
who had died and the proceeds of the sale of the pennants were sent to Old Trafford.Oh to get hold of one of them.
They also offered all the survivors and their families free holidays in Spain, all expenses paid.

When United won the European Cup in 1968,one of the first telegrams Matt Busby got said,
' To a wonderful football man and club,Real Madrid toast your success.
signed Don Santiago Bernabeu.

I fully recommend this book to any fan who is interested in our history especially about our once great relationship
with Real Madrid, something which seems to be non-existant now, sadly.
