Herrera hands down, one of 2 players in the squad right now that gets what it is to represent united and to be a fan of the club

Herrera would have to become a lot more respectful and professional to be a captain.

I think Valencia might be a good shout. He should be a mainstay in the team, he has been around a long time and he's always been extremely professional. The only real drawback is that he seems relatively quiet.

If giving to VAlencia, might as well give it De Ge a.

Do you lot not think it is a sad reflection of what this club has come to that you are struggling to find one person with good enough attributes to be club captain
Because of his loyalty etc Valencia is the stand out person but i believe he still might not speak English
I am not sure about that
Certainly on the training ground he communicates in Spanish
As club captain he would need to be interviewed significantly more than h does now

Mata is a very special human being who is also a candidate for me but will he be around next season
Don't forget Jose couldn't wait to get rid of him when they were at Chelsea
That said he wasn't good enough to be in the Chelsea team and that can't be said about this current crock of shit

Herrera has been a great player this season, one of our best, and I am not taking away from anything he contributes on the pitch, but if you haven't noticed he's generally got a bad attitude on the pitch, dirty tackles, complaining to the refs.

I actually think Ray nailed it, Mata. I would way rather have someone more diplomatic in the role. We have just spent 3 years with someone who's only attribute as captain is yelling at the ref.... or his young teammates when he fornicate up.

The problem with Mata is that he do not have a guaranteed place in the team.

from all the players on the pitch Herrera always looks the most motivated. He's vocal and is pressing the opponents all the time. He's also looks the most passionate player we have.

Mata is too nice to be a captain imo. i guess Roy Keane's stlye is my thing for a captain material

Decided to put a poll up.

Wouldnt be totally shocked if Carrick got a 1 year extension and was given the captaincy. Good temperament, ambassador etc, good with media. Could be a short term option with probably Pogba being groomed loinger term?

Mata

Speaks well, intelligent, respectful. Personally I think he is one of the players we should be building a team around. I also think he has grown on Jose during the season, still would prefer to see him playing as a no. 10 but I think Jose will keep him on the right.

Call that a fight? Bailly is young and will get to the point where shit like that just roles off him.

For me the captain has to be one of your best players who will play most games. Carrick isn't going to be playing a lot of games if he stays on so that's him out.
Mata is probably ambassador material. He seems a thoroughly decent chap and every credit to him but he's not an inspirational leader.
Herrera is annoying as fornicate. I've started to dislike him. He's picked up a bit performance wise this season but again he's not captain material.
De gea could be a decent candidate but he's constantly linked away and tbh I don't particularly like goalkeeper captains, although it's not my call.
Looking round the rest of the squad I don't see any other stand out candidates bar Bailley. He can be the cornerstone for us. Our Kompany quite possibly. He's young, very gifted, tough physically and seemingly mentally. I think he's the only real player with a decent shout of being a long term captain

Herrera is that player. Lifts from midfield, passionate when he plays, gets the club, hes a supporter of the club and he can inspire with performance

I would love Mata, but hes too soft, and we really need a leader on the field. We havent had one since Keane

Herrera is the next best thing. I agree with you we need someone who can inspire on the field and we really have nothing close to it and its a sad sorry state

I thought Bailly could be that player, but after seeing him punch a player when hes 5 minutes away from a European cup final, I have second thoughts

I'd make carrick captain for one season and revisit the situation a year later.

would love to see one chosen long term right away but each have some cons

de gea - future uncertain, not vocal, not to mention goalie
valencia - turning 32 this summer, not a long term choice for me. also, language barrier
bailly - language barrier
smalling - has had more injuries this season and almost certain to be outside the first eleven if we sign a defender this summer
herrera - i agree with relly. as much as i like him as a player, he is missing captain etiquette for me. maybe a couple years down the road
pogba - not quite there yet, needs to mature more
mata - not sure if he will be a starter

darmian, blind, micky and rashford could all potentially work but time will tell. I think blind would make a great captain but he wont be a starter. maybe if shaw leaves and blind is permanently moved to the left he has a chance.

Why is everyone thinking long term ? how are we so sure current players are going to stay for more than 4-5 years?

Sadly no one in that list convinces me.. smalling  If Jones stays fit, and improves as a defender, then he has a good shout. however he's too inconsistent and is injury prone for me
