2-1 FT

Apart from a loss of momentum in the first 20 minutes of the 2nd half and the awfulness of Blind, we played well and I was particularly pleased with Martial and Axel.

I should have added that Matic/Pogba is awesome, making the latter free to play the way he was before he came back here, wonderful cross field passes and all.

Not the best opposition we will face this season but overall, apart from a 20 - 25 minute spell in the second half, I though we looked pretty good. In the 1st half we where very fluid and how the score stayed at only 1 - nil I'll never know. The second half changed as soon as Rashford and Martial came on, uptil then we had looked a little lost or direction less.

Yeah.
I thought the loss of momentum was that we no longer had the Matic/Pogba axis driving us forward.
Carrick has done a great job over the years, but I have watched a lot of games where the momentum was not with us when he was the controlling midfielder,
Not that it was just him, we seemed to drift.
I thought Axel made a difference when he came on to, and was the perfect foil for Martial as well as covering the left.
How the heck Blind can be picked ahead of him beggars belief.

Did you share my assessment of the unmitigated awfulness of Blind, Arizona?

Until Rashford came on all our corners were crap too, and Blind was one of the guilty men.

Guys:

When a stream is available, try to catch at least the first half.
It is a different world with Matic controlling the midfield and freeing up Pogba.

You will love it.

Have to mention Matic - what an obvious impact/difference he makes. While thinking Carrick gives us control and cover, we now actually see what it really means. Matic picks up balls from defense, he gets in our box to defend, he is in the opponents half and picks up loose balls there or breaks up play there. He can pass and move with the ball

I have never seen Pogba this advanced, playing cross field balls, attacking near the box, one touch play with the fowards

Special mention to Tuanzabe..perfect option for LB - Blind cant seriously still play there

Just another quick thought as others catch up on the game - our crossing into the box is still seriously crap most of the time, and until Mata came up we were often bereft of people making a run in to pick it up anyway.

Boy, do we need a real winger ahead of Axel and Tim, although both are aggressive enough going forward that they can and do put the ball in themselves.

If I am not yet as pleased as Punch, I am certainly now enjoying the show more.

Here you go, guys.

You got to check out at least the first half and 'The Matic Difference':

Agree, the Matic effect is blatant (especially since CDM arent really standout players) and also with the positions Pogba takes up

The 'Blind Difference' is also substantial, but NOT in a good way!

Check out Axel in the second half, and spot the difference.

Having watched the first half again, I think I was incorrect about Blind.

He was much worse than I said.

Perreira to be fair also did not do much except show how not to cross the ball.

But what a difference Matic made!

I think Blind has had a piss poor pre-season regardless of where or he has been played. He has been caught out numerous times by anyone that is remotely quick or speedy, he has been especially poor when he has played with Carrick and Fellaini, the trio just doesn't have the pace and cannot help each other out.

In the Sampadoria game Blinds crosses and corner reached an all time low.

TBF Blind did nearly score a remarkable goal , and only a worldie by DDG stopped it.

I can't think Jose can intend to play him this season.

Axel is several leagues ahead of him.

It's sad but Darmian has played better at LB than Blind.

Darmian playing better than someone is a shock to the system, but very true in this case and he even put in a couple of decent crosses.

I'm not feeling Lindelof at the moment, but it is early days and some take longer than others to settle.

I thought he really liked having Matic ahead of him to cover, but there is little sign that he intends to rampage forward, ever, and even Phil Jones has a usually unsuccessful bash at that from time to time.

Axel and Tim are several miles ahead though.

Just taking pre-season into account I would start Tuanzebe

I think Tim's crosses are often better than Valencia's too, and Toni has made some pretty horrendous defensive gaffes in pre-season, including a missed tackle which led to the goal tonight.

Not much chance of Jose putting much trust in youth though, one imagines, and the best one can hope for is some extremely debilitating illnesses to strike some of the deadwood we have.

You consider Valencia and Blind to be deadwood ?
