Great read and touching story.

It's hard for me, growing up internationally, as much as I would like to, to be able to truly be a part of the fabric of United. When I talk to my Dutch friends, they ask me who do I support. I tell them 'Manchester United'. Their response is always the same. 'Yeah, OK, I like [either United, Chelsea, Liverpool, or Arsenal] as well, but which Dutch team do you support?'

To most people who don't know me well, I come across as just another ignorant boy who follows the successful team. And I guess to an extent they're right. Being an Indian born in New Zealand and raised in the Netherlands, I could never really empathize with a local club.

I don't even remember how I became a United fan. My theory is that it was after the our famous Champions League win in 99'. A lot of people claim that this proves that I don't know anything about United, don't know what its like to live in Manchester, have a family of United supporters, be a part of United.

I truly don't know.

What I do know, however, is that perhaps it doesn't matter so much how I became a United fan, but why and in what way I love the club. I remember watching that game in 99', knowing nothing about the names that graced the backs of the United shirts, nor anything about the club or its history, nor to be honest, did I care. For all I remember was being transfixed by the fans as they celebrated their victory. I was not even aware of the facts that this was the final leg of the treble, the promised land, nor even did those two late goals ever sink in with me. It was the passion of the fans, the spirit they had, that I believe led me on the path towards this club and still keeps me passionate about the club today.

For as much as people claim that I am a mere glory hunter, I know deep inside of me that United has become a core part of my life, even if my own life does not contribute back to the club.

Brilliant Ste.

My story probably typical of many overseas fans. Pre 98 world cup I didn't watch any football, mostly just play badminton and cycling.
First time watching was the world cup 1998 because of the hype in class, everyone was betting so I just join. I remember waking up to see that brilliant Owen goal, Ronaldo and Zidane two headers in the final. Football is exciting, I thought.
That's when I started to watch football and how to miss United team that year? Not till the time I joined TR that I begin to read about the club history, traditions, etc. Post from people like Lawfan really helps a lot for people like me to understand the club.

Fast forward this year, in my mid-thirties, still, supporting the club from far but supporting nevertheless.
