January 18 window

Sat Jan 06, 2018 9:39 pm

Hearing reports that Leicester have accepted a bid of £45m for Mahrez. Gutted if true!

I read that Liverpool were in for Mahrez but now say they are not interested.
I think he is a terrific player and would be a great addition to the squad.

We are linked to the Brazilian wonder kid Malcolm who everybody in Europe is raving about. That can only mean he is going to Barca,Madrid,PSG or City so perhaps forget about him.
Rumours also that Gareth Bale is on his way!!!.
Not holding my breath about anybody with Woodward our transfer negotiating maestro. :(

At this point why would anyone even want Bale, let alone pay money for him? He is very injury prone, and that seems to be getting worse as he gets older.

Can't believe no one mentioned Coutinho to Barcelona. Third most expensive player of all time. Hopefully this derails Liverpools season.

No arguments with that,I think he only played 50% of games for Real.
Big financial risk unless a low transfer fee with add-ons is agreed.

Still a great player when fit.

Yeah Bale is 28 and already seems to be crocked beyond repair. He'll sell shirts though :)

To paraphrase Ray - his form may be on the wane but he'll be a commercial godsend :P

Re Coutinho - contrary to social media comments, I think its a fantastic deal for the scousers. £140m for a player who is mercurial and very talented, but he isn't one of the best 3-4 players in the world - they can still put out a front 3 of Salah Firmino and Mane with Lallana and Sturridge to supplement. They've overpaid for Van Dijk but they clearly knew what they were getting from Barca and still have £70m to strengthen their squad, maybe get a top class keeper and another high quality DC. IF (big IF) they can do that, then they will be a serious contender next season (there, that should jinx them) :P

I consider Bale to be a "Coach Killer" type player. When he is fit and healthy he can be the type of player to build a dynasty around, unfortunately part way into the build he get an injury and misses a good part of the season. Next season comes around and he suffers a reoccurrence and most of the season he is in and out of the squad.

Real Madrid is going to want a bucket load of money for him and I just don't see that he has that many more years left in him.

Let him go back to Spurs.

He can't see any other path other than him kicking around Real for a few more years until some midtable team scoops him up for nothing. Can't see a big club every forking out real money on such a gamble. It's a damn shame for the record, because I do like him as a player.

IMHO if we are to challenge for the title (or anything next season) we need to look at three key positions we ( I feel) are lacking in, a dedicated RB, a dedicated LB that doesn't get injured looking in the mirror, and a DM that can tackle and break up play.

Hard to argue with bringing in a RB or someone that can step up to RWB, at LB I would give Shaw until next summer to show he can play the position on a regular basis without hurting hisself. The third area I think we need covering is a playmaker in the Luca Modric mode. Far too many time we see defenses sitting in bank of 5 & 4 and we pass the ball around and around.

Well.... It's gotten quite active hasn't it?

Aubameyang to Arsenal (they really should've gone for him last summer)
Lucas Moura to Spurs (don't know why I feel envious of that one)
Laporte to City
Mahrez to City (potentially) - I think most big teams missed a trick not going for this earlier

Is there any of these you'd rather we hijacked? We seem to be the masters of that these days!

I feel like Moura is one of these average Brazilian players who's whole career has been hyped up by the constant transfer speculation around him.

I'd swap Mata for Mahrez. Thanks but no thanks to the rest.

And City has just left Mahrez in a lurch ... Twice this window they've pulled out of what looked like coups. Current evidence on the field suggests they know what they're doing, but we'll see if that's the case going forward.
They don't seem to consider what they're doing to the player though. I doubt Mahrez would have thrown in a transfer request if he hadn't been given assurances.

They may be doing a Barca .... Unsettle the player first and then go back in the summer when the club are fed up with a distracted player
