Toilet breaks.

Fri Jan 26, 2018 10:56 am

I am a primary school teacher (year 6). I don't let children go to the toilet during lessons. Would this be a rule you would object for your child?

Absolutely. If someone has to go to the washroom then let them go, It's school, not prison. If I had a kid and they told me their teacher wouldn't let them go to the washroom I would tell them to just get up and go and I will deal with the consequences.

I don't think it's a good idea to have a ban. But at the same time kids take the piss. It's pretty easy to spot who is genuinely in need and who is treating it as holiday though.

Yes you should let them go, I understand why you don’t and we had that rule in place at school but if you are bursting then it’s affecting your concentration and your study.

Also depends what time your class is, if after lunch then they should have gone during the break but if in the 2 hour slot between break and lunch then it’s fair enough thinking they may need to go.

If my child had an accident because the teacher didn't let them go to the toilet I'd be so angry.

I say you're taking a chance with a blanket rule there. If a kid is genuinely bursting, that's really harsh, and yeah, if mine got really embarrassed due to what I'd deem an unnecessary accident, I wouldn't be best pleased myself.

Like it's mentioned though, I understand why you do it. How about putting a limit to the number of times they go?
