When Manchester United travelled to Spain to meet Real Madrid
at the wonderous Bernabeu Stadium on May 15th, 1968, they took
with them a 1-0 lead from the first match of their European Cup
Semi Final at Old Trafford.
As quickly as the game began, Pirri had scored for Real to level
the scores overall. It was not on their agenda to do that. It got
worse too as five minutes later Gento had put Madrid two ahead
on the night and 2-1 on aggregate.
When Zoco scored a brilliant header, sadly into his own net, the
scores were level over the two legs.
That was not to be for long though, Amancio scored right on the
stroke of half time. The players went into the dressing room 3-2
down having fought their hearts out.
Matt Busby had told them: "Right, it's ATTACK or nothing!!"
It did seem that United's Semi Final jinx which had befallen them
on three previous occasions, was back to haunt them again.
David Sadler though, had decided it was time to "ATTACK or nothing".
He scored single handedly to make the score on the night 3-3 and 4-3
Manchester United had booked their place in the Final along with
Benfica who were considered one of the best in Europe at the tume.
We had just one more magical night that May, before the sun set on another pioneering season!
