I remember some talk about a Setanta billboard in Manchester that advertised "Man U" games.
It was one or two years ago.
Obviously not everyone was happy about it.

Setanta did it constantly, we got their feed from England, and the had is all the time.

You get no argument from me about Setanta.

However I do not think anyone was using the "it on tv" defense.
Actually you would find a lot of fans writing to tv companies and have them change that to UTD or MUTD or even MU on tv.

Quite right. It was used on billboards countrywide 2 years ago. I complained to Setanta but never had a reply-what a surprise!

The Tees Mouth column on BBC website uses the Man U phrase. I've sent them a few complaints but nothing's been done about it. I suppose they think it's "just a name".

I got thinking abt this and read all the stuff that went between ya'll n jcl. I think john's right. Its only a lost cause if people are not prepared to fight for it. We can only start with united fans to learn more about their club and stop using that name. And then go on to others cos they're all using it through ignorance. As someone said earlier, most will listen to the reasoning and stop using it. Some will just forget abt it and continue using it. I don't get worked up just because someone is using that name cos thass what they learnt to do but I do keep on informing them of the origin of the name. There's only so much we can do. But what we can do is keep doing it.

I always pull people up about this. I don't just tell them not to do it, I explain the full story to them and educate them. The response from United and other fans is usually very good and they apologise for not knowing about it.

Of course, it's not their fault if they have never been told why it is wrong. So all we can do is carry on educating those that don't know and ask them to pas this knowledge on to others.

Welcome to the board, Mark! Thanks for your education of fellow(and foe) supporters.
Some weeks ago I said that I was going to contact someone to see if he could help with the information on how 'the term' came about, but shamefully, I've been busy and haven't gotten around to doing so.

The term 'Man U' came from the songs that were made up after Munich.

"Man U are ManUre, rotting in their graves" and other such sick shite.

Munich = Man U Never Intended Coming Home

Many people lay the blame for these songs that were made up on Liverpool and Leeds fans, obvious candidates, but on this occasion they were not guilty. It was started by WBA fans after Munich. They were mighty upset Sir Matt had snatched Duncan Edwards from under their noses. He had sent Bert Whalley to drive through the night to Big Dunc's house on his 16 th birthday to sign him up. I must add that some sections of the Liverpool, Leeds and Man City fans will sing these songs even today given the chance. So they are not completely innocent.

Edwards was born in Dudley and the people of the West Midlands thought they had a God given right to keep him there playing for their teams, Sir Matt had other ideas.

Duncan Edwards is still held in very high regard by the people of the West Midlands and by United fans. There is not a day goes by when Edward's grave does not have fresh red and white carnations on it. People don't arrive at his grave in a slow trickle to pay their respects, they arrive by the coachload to spend a few minutes with perhaps the best footballer United ever had.

When Manchester United play in the West Midlands the team coach always stops on Stourbridge Road in Dudley for 2 minutes for the players to pay their respects too.

So there you go, to those who think it's "just a name" or that it's "no big deal" you have no place as a United fan and I wish people like this would just go on their way to the next team they want to follow and leave us to support United.
