Our club crest

Fri Apr 10, 2009 3:59 pm

Our ole crest which we had through sometime during the 60s/70s looks very similar to the current manchester city crest:
ImageImage
they both have the three diagonal stripes and share the three-sailed boat on the top which our current crest also has, what's the story behind that?

Image
and when did the whole 'red devils' thing come about?

I've just been wondering for some time and it'd be nice if someone could basically clarify why our crest is what it is at the moment (Y) :)

The three stripes on the badges were from the city of Manchester coat of arms and represent the three rivers in Manchester - The Irk, the Irwell and the Medlock.

The ship is said to represent the Manchester Ship Canal, although when the arms was originally designed for the City, the canal had not been built.

Also, this was a new coat of arms for Manchester that was brought in during the mid 1950s:

Image

Notice how it is the same as the current City crest? And the same as this, worn on our shirt in the 1958 cup final?:

Image

Many people believe the crest on the 1958 shirt to represent a phoenix, as though signaling the club's resurrection after the Munich Air Disaster that year, but actually it was just the contemporary City arms, and the bird is an eagle.

Also, in case you were wondering, the three stars above City's badge are - according to their own website - "Purely decorative"!

I prefer the old crest.

The new one just looks like a brand's logo and not a football club's crest.

You are not alone. I hate the black bits on it. The old early 1970s crest was the best one:

Quite right. As I just said to Amaan in a PM (while telling him that I'd moved the thread) that I believe that there's stilla big want from the supporters to bring back 'Football Club' into the crest. It should never have been changed anyway!

1966 was a great year for English football. Eric was born!

It's not just that, though. I like the white bits, the golden shade of yellow, the lack of ugly black edges and the skinny red devil. The old crest just looked classy. The current one looks cheap and nasty, in my opinion.

I'd love it if they did a subtle re-design based on the old crest, like they have just done with the England one.

Agreed (Y)

By removing ''Football Club'' off the crest, it indicates United are no longer a football club (N)

Too much yellow on our current crest.

They also changed the badge in the 70's, the balls were replaced by football boots

I've still never seen any evidence of that, Graham. Any photos?

I've trawled the net but not found one,I know it existed because I actually saw it, it coincided with adidas sponsoring the players boots, there was a bit of fuss because George refused to wear adidas boots, prefering puma instead

That is odd. Especially as Umbro made the players kits when Best was playing. You'd have thought even back then there'd be exclusive deals. It sounds like basically Adidas wanted to advertise their products on Umbro shirts?

You are forgetting one thing...............the badge/crest rarely appeared on shirts, not really until the Doc's era

It was on shirts from 1972 onwards (yes, coinciding with the Tommy Docherty era). Do you mean this crest with boots was not on the shirts then? And it was prior to 1972?

I think it first made an appearance around the end of the 72 season

Addidas was a boot only deal, back then they didn't do strips.

I think ''red devils'' was the nickname of Salford City Reds (the rugby team) to start with and United got it from them.
