The Championship 17/18

Fri Aug 04, 2017 8:20 pm

So the new season is already underway.

Started off at Stadium of Light with a minute's applause for young Bradley - then Sunderland, seemingly buoyed, started really well for 10 mins. Crowd were really up for it. Then in 11th minute Derby had their first attack and scored! Not much changes for the Mackem does it!!

Anyway - anyone have any opinions on this league? On paper it could be even more competitive than ever.

Sunderland, Hull and Boro who all came down last season have big finances to get back up again.
Add in the likes of both Villa, Sheffield clubs, Reading, Norwich, Leeds, Fulham, Derby, Forest plus big-spending Wolves and 'Arrys Birmingham - there could be up to 15 clubs who would fancy their chances of at least making the play-offs!

A poll to get us started - who will win the Championship?

Really difficult to predict. Villa were favourites with the bookies until Saturday's draw. I would back Villa if Kodjia was fit and ready but he's a few weeks off.

If Villa can't do it (don't think they will), I want Wolves to. They are a good club and have some ambitious plans for Molineux which I'd like to see come to fruition.

Villa, Wolves automatic and Blues in the play offs would be a dream.

I'd love Burton to somehow get promoted.

Interesting match tonight between the bottom 2.

Bolton visit Sunderland - Bolton haven't had an away win in the Ch'ship in over 900 days!

However, even more amazingly, Sunderland haven't won a home match in OVER A YEAR! (the poor fans!)

Something's gotta give..unless its a draw!

I might've known..it ended in a 3-3 draw!

Oh and Simon Grayson's been given the sack on the back of it! Who'd want that job, honestly?!

Fulham are in excellent form and right in there for a play off spot.

Wolves still winning.

Everyone will be pleased that Leeds have fallen to bits.

Sunderland with an unreal comeback yesterday.

Today's game was pretty good. Bruce looked as if he was going to break down after the first goal. Fair play to him for being there.

(Y) legend!

Looking quite likely that Wolves & Villa will come up now but WBA could be going the opposite direction. Never quiet in the West Midlands ;)

I didn't think Sunderland could get out of The Championship at the first time of asking, but fair play to them they're giving it a real go.

Sunderland won 4-1 at Derby for their 1st win in 12. Gives them a chance to survive.

At the top Wolves and Cardiff are almost nailed on for promotion. Villa and Fulham are nailed on for playoffs. The battle for the final 2 playoff spots is between the next 6 teams only separated by 2 points! Fulham are in great form and worryingly for Martin, Villa may just miss out!

If Villa miss the play offs everyone ought to be ashamed considering the resources the club has.

Should be OK now.

2nd is gone though, heard the radio commentators (BBC WM) saying the race for 2nd continues last night. I don't think so.

It would require Villa winning probably every game until the end of the season and Cardiff dropping points in three of theirs. I doubt it.

Unlikely, but their next two games are Wolves and Villa, and they have an away game in Derby who need to win. Add in games to Hull and Reading who could do with points to make themselves a bit more comfortable, and I don't think it's a foregone conclusion. Though if Wolves don't get something from the game this Friday, and if Villa don't beat them, then they're up.

Fulham's run-in looks a bit easier than both Cardiff's and Villa's.

So Wolves are up (all but). Cardiff's loss to Wolves means its tight now between them and Fulham for 2nd place. Whoever dosent come 2nd will be in the playoffs. Villa's defeat at Norwich means its the playoffs for them, with Derby and one other team TBD.

I quite fancy the top 3 (whatever order those 3 finish in) to get promoted.

At the other end of the table, Sunderland were beating Norwich, and then conceded in the 89th minute to end up 1-1. Pretty much ends their hopes of staying up.

Fulham 81 pts played 42
Cardiff 80 pts played 42 (currently drawing against Norwich)
Villa 79 pts played 43

Come on Norwich!

Cardiff won sadly, so opened up a bit of a gap.
