World Cup qualification thread

Sat Oct 07, 2017 10:53 pm

The WC qualification table for SouthAmerica is ridiculously close. 4teams to qualify and 1 goes to a play-off game. With 1 game left only Brazil have qualified but anyone from Uruguay in 2nd to Paraguay in 7th can still make it with just 1 match to play!

Also Argentina must win their final game at Ecuador to even stand a chance of a play-off spot. Can you imagine Argentina not at a WC!

Based on that qualificationrecord of 6 wins in 17 games and just 16 goals in 17 games, I don't think they're anywhere near challenging for a WC!

On paper they should score 100 goals in 20 games. Higuin, Aguero, Dybala, Di Maria, Messi

Netherlands is essentially out. Need a small miracle to even make the playoffs.

Elsewhere Scotland missed out as they failed to beat Slovenia and so Slovakia took 2nd place in the group England won. But this result meant N Ireland were guaranteed a play-off spot!

A pretty average weekend from Northern Ireland but all the hard work was done before this set of fixtures.

Having Germany in the group - 2nd place was the only realistic option for the rest of the group.

Lets hope the Playoff draw is kind for us.

Euro qualifiers to date: Russia, Belgium, Spain, Germany, England, Poland.

4 more group winners will qualify then 4 of the playoff wiunners.

Just to recap: the best 8 2nd place teams from the 9 groups will contest the play-offs.

As it stands 6 teams are certs:
Portugal/Switz (depending who wins grp or comes 2nd),
France / Sweden ( " ")
N. Ireland
Italy
Denmark
Greece (or Bosnia)

The final 2 places will be either:

Slovakia
Serbia/Wales/Ireland (whoever comes 2nd)
Icleand/ Croatia/Ukraine (" ")

As things stand right now if no one scores in any games (all 9 games tonight are 0-0 after 30 mins) then Croatia would miss out and playoff teams would be:
Portugal Italy Sweden Denmark Greece N.Ireland Slovakia Wales

and based on current FIFA rankings the 4 seeds would be Portugal Italy Wales and would you believe Slovakia [N.Ireland are ONE place below Slovakia in the rankings!]. Meaning Wales v N.Ireland would be a real possibility!

Ireland score in Wales! Could be a massive goal by James McClean.

Also Croatia lead in Ukraine.

If my maths is correct that would mean Slovakia becoming the 2nd place team to miss out. Both Irelands would be in, Wales out.

Also (and this is all subject to my slide rule being correct). If Croatia win tonight and Wales-Ire draw, both will miss out on the playoffs! So Wales need 2 goals in 15 mins!

GROUP A (1 match left)
FRANCE (prob winners - home to Belarus in final game)
SWEDEN (almost certain R/U barring a 7 goal defeat, and in the playoffs)

GROUP B
SWITZERLAND/PORTUGAL (play each other in final match. Swiss win group with a draw, Portugal with a win. The "loser" is definitely in the playoffs)

GROUP C
GERMANY winners
N.IRELAND play-offs

GROUP D
SERBIA winners
Rep IRELAND play-offs

GROUP E
POLAND winners
DENMARK playoffs

GROUP F
ENGLAND winners
Slovakia 2nd but miss out

GROUP G
SPAIN winners
ITALY playoffs

GROUP H
BELGIUM winners
GREECE playoffs (technically Bosnia can pip them but only if Greece lose at home to..Gibraltar! So yeah its Greece)

GROUP I
ICELAND winners
CROATIA playoffs

The playoff teams will be Croatia, Greece, Italy, Denmark, Ireland, N.Ireland, Sweden (prob) and Switz/Portugal

Whoever comes 2nd between Switz (7)/Portugal (3) will be seeded, as will Italy (17), Croatia (18) and probably Norn Iron (20)*
Sweden are 23rd, Denmark 26th, Republic 34th and Greece 47th

* Not sure if the rankings will change on the back of the last round of results. Norn Iron's loss in Norway could be very costly!! Let's hope Holland beat Sweden tomorrow!

If anyone's still reading, here's a thought...

its entirely conceivable that the WC could take place without Bale, Messi and Ronaldo!!

Bale is not really a surprise. Wales had never been that good.

Our defeat v Norway has more or less unseeded us which is a shame however if you want to win the world cup you have to beat the best :P

No chance of a Northern Ireland v Republic of Ireland now - that would have been......well quite tasty.
